Kalamazoo Gets First Win of 2005 Season, Downing Agnes Scott College by 4-0 Score September 10, 2005 |
The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team earned its first win of the young 2005 season on Saturday with a 4-0 shutout of Agnes Scott College (GA) on the first day of the 2005 Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, Tennessee. The result gives the Hornets a record of 1-1-1 for the year (0-1 MIAA), and sets the team up to face Haverford College (PA) in the second game of the Classic on Sunday 9/11 (10:00am).
Despite a somewhat shaky effort by the Hornets in the first 10-15 minutes of play--during which Agnes Scott earned multiple corner kicks and posted a few early shots on goal--Kalamazoo got itself on the scoreboard in the 26th minute off a goal by sophomore forward Aliza Caplan. Just under 6 minutes later, Caplan helped the Hornet team earn its second goal of the day when she hit a low crossed ball through traffic inside the 18-yard-box, which was put into the back of the net by onrushing freshman midfielder Kelly Lepper. For the rest of the first half, Kalamazoo never let up, and with just 36 seconds remaining in the half Lepper earned her second goal of the day, putting K up by a 3-0 score entering halftime.
In the second half, it took the Hornets just under 9 minutes to earn goal number 4--this time from senior flank midfielder Megan Brady. For the remainder of the game, Kalamazoo controlled the play and had most of the possession, although Agnes Scott was able to put up 4 shots on goal for the half. Reserve goalkeeper Jennie Smith made 3 great saves near the end of the game to preserve the Hornet shutout.
For the game, sophomores Monisha Berkowski (59 minutes) and Jennie Smith (31 minutes) split time in goal for the Hornets, and earned the shared shutout. Berkowski posted 4 saves for the game, while Smith had 3 in the second half.
