Kalamazoo Loses to National Powerhouse Haverford College September 11, 2005 |
The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team dropped a tough one to national power Haverford College (PA) by an 8-0 score on the second day of the 2005 Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, Tennessee. Coming into the game, Haverford was ranked in the NCAA Division III Top-30, having received votes in the national poll that week. The result gives the Hornets a record of 1-2-1 for the year (0-1 MIAA), and the team will face up next against MIAA opponent Alma College on Wednesday 9/14 at home (4:00pm).
Kalamazoo played hard in the opening minutes of the game, earning itself a couple shots and forcing Haverford's goalkeeper to make an early save. Haverford's possession game and quick ball movement were tough to shut down, however, and the Fords got on the scoreboard in just the 13th minute of play when 2004 First Team All-American Elena Kozakewich took a shot from the right side of the 18-yard-box that hit off the inside of K's far left post and tucked into the goal. The goal rattled the Hornets mentally, and before they could recover, Haverford struck again just 1 minute later to go up 2-0. Kalamazoo tried to regain its composure, and actually created a few nice scoring opportunities midway through the half--including a great play that resulted in a driven shot by junior midfielder Macy Lepper which Haverford's goalkeeper had to dive through the air to knock out of bounds for a corner kick. K was unable to find the back of the net, however, and as time wound down in the first half, Haverford scored 2 more goals to enter halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
In the second half, Haverford out-shot Kalamazoo by a 16-2 margin (10-2 shots on goal). Just as was the case in the first half, the Hornets again had trouble in the opening and closing minutes of the half, but did a decent job of shutting Haverford down during the middle of the half. Thus, Haverford scored the remainder of its goals in the first 10 and last 10 minutes of the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Monisha Berkowski posted 13 saves off Haverford's 21 shots on goal for the game. For the day, Kalamazoo was outshot by a 36-6 margin (21-4 shots on goal).
