Hornets Earn Shutout Win at Adrian College by 2-0 Score September 24, 2005 |
Despite overcast, cooler-than-normal weather and a sloppy field, Kalamazoo earned its third win of the 2005 season by a score of 2-0 at Adrian College on Saturday. With the win, the Hornets improve their 2005 season record to 3-4-1 overall (2-3 MIAA), and will next play host to Tri-State Univ. (IN) for another MIAA game on Wednesday 9/28 (4:00pm).
Kalamazoo didn't wait long to open the game's scoring, as freshman forward Sarah Arnosky struck in just the 16th minute of play to earn her second goal of the season. She stole the ball from a Bulldog defender near Adrian's 18-yard-box, beat another defender, and then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to put Kalamazoo up 1-0. In response, Adrian mounted a few credible attacks early in the first half of play, earning a corner kick and forcing Hornet goalkeeper Monisha Berkowski to make 4 first-half saves. Berkowski preserved K's shutout, however, and soon the Hornets settled into a rhythm and most of the play was in Adrian's end of the field.
Midway through the first half, Kalamazoo appeared to have scored its second goal of the day when Arnosky again broke free in Adrian's end of the field and approached the goalkeeper in a 1v1 situation. At the top of the 18-yard-box, Arnosky attempted to dribble around the goalkeeper, taking a lengthy touch to the left. The ball seemed to be just out of Arnosky's reach as another Adrian defender recovered to help out, but Arnosky stretched to quickly tap the ball to the left to sophomore midfielder Aubrey Parker, who was rushing up the left side. Parker took one touch and shot the ball into the back of the Bulldog net to earn her first-ever collegiate goal; unfortunately, because the goalkeeper was still at the top of the 18-yard-box, the linesman called Parker offsides and the goal was taken back.
Kalamazoo finally earned an insurance goal in the 43rd minute of play when Arnosky slotted a ball on the ground to freshman midfielder Kelly Lepper just inside the 18-yard-box. Lepper easily finished the ball, putting the Hornets up 2-0 and ensuring the K College win. In the second half, Kalamazoo stepped up its defensive effort, and held Adrian to just one second-half shot. The final 5-10 minutes of play were a frenzied effort in front of the Bulldog goal to score a third time, but a series of struck-posts and near-misses kept the game at 2-0.
For the day, Kalamazoo held a 19-6 advantage in the shots category, and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Monisha Berkowski posted 5 saves off Adrian's 6 shots (5 shots on goal).
