Kalamazoo Earns Impressive 7-1 Victory Over Rochester College (MI)

September 18, 2006

The Kalamazoo College women's soccer team earned an impressive 7-1 victory over the visiting Rochester College Warriors on Monday 9/18 at MacKenzie Field. The Hornets struck early and never trailed, getting onto the scoreboard in just the 2nd minute of play when sophomore midfielder Kelly Lepper received a pass from freshman midfielder Katie Manstrom and slotted it into the back of the net. Just 7 minutes later, freshman midfielder Kristen Jost scored her first-ever collegiate goal (the eventual game-winner), assisted by Lepper.

Two minutes later, after dominating the opening 10 minutes of play, Kalamazoo suffered a defensive breakdown and allowed Rochester to get onto the scoreboard off a break-away by the Warriors' Krystn Freeman. Freeman carried Rochester's offensive efforts for most of the game, posting 8 of her team's 14 shots for the day.

Kalamazoo earned an insurance goal in the 21st minute, again by Jost and this time unassisted. Scoring for the first half was rounded out in the 36th minute when Manstrom scored one of her own--a gorgeous full-volley from about 10-12 yards out--assisted by freshman midfielder Paige Howell, who hit a picture-perfect cross right into Manstrom's stride. For the half, Kalamazoo out-shot the Warriors by a 20-7 margin (13-4 for shots-on-goal).

The Hornets carried the possession during the second half, and posted twice as many shots as their opponent (14 shots to Rochester's 7 in the second period). The scoring opened right away, just as it had in the first half, when junior forward Aliza Caplan got on the board just 2 minutes into the second half with a goal that was assisted by senior forward Lizzy Hauslein. Lepper carried the scoring for the rest of the game, connecting on a PK in the 58th minute, and then earning her final goal in the 82nd minute--a rifled shot from outside the 18-yard-box, assisted by sophomore defender Stephanie Jones.

Kalamazoo's Kassie Johnston made 6 saves (3 in each half) in goal for the Hornets, while Rochester's Jennifer Stamevski made 14 saves on the day.

The Hornets will open the 2006 MIAA season this coming Saturday 9/23 at Calvin College (12:00pm). Kalamazoo enters the game with a 3-2-0 overall record (19 goals scored; 8 against = 3rd best in MIAA so far); Calvin remains unbeaten at 8-0-0 overall (28 goals scored; 4 against = 1st in MIAA so far).
